Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings are considered the best days to visit with fewer crowds. Arriving at the opening time of 08:00 gives you the quietest first hour in the galleries. Avoid 11:00 to 14:00 when coach tours and cruise ship groups are at their most concentrated particularly in the Gallery of Maps and the Raphael Rooms.
Allow at least 3 to 4 hours for a thorough visit covering the key highlights including the Pio-Clementine Museum, the Gallery of Maps, the Raphael Rooms, and the Sistine Chapel. Art lovers and history enthusiasts could comfortably spend a full day. The first entry slot at 08:00 and the last two hours from 16:00 are the quietest windows for visiting.
Rolling restoration work began in the Sistine Chapel on 1 February 2026. Scaffolding covers one corner of the ceiling but approximately 85 percent of the frescoes remain fully visible. Michelangelo's Last Judgement on the altar wall is completely unaffected. The restoration is ongoing and progress updates can be found on the official Vatican Museums website.
The Vatican Museums are open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 20:00 with last entry at 18:00. On the last Sunday of each month the museums are open from 09:00 to 14:00 with free entry and last entry at 12:30. The museums are closed every other Sunday and on numerous religious and public holidays. Always check the official Vatican Museums calendar before visiting.
The Vatican Museums are located in Vatican City. The most convenient Metro station is Ottaviano on Line A, approximately a 10-minute walk from the main entrance on Viale Vaticano. Bus lines 23, 40, 49, 62, and 64 also stop nearby. The entrance to the museums is separate from St Peter's Square and located on the north side of Vatican City.
